An increasing number of jurisdictions have enacted Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS), including the District of Columbia, which is the most aggressive program of its kind nationwide. The process requires utility data and facility benchmarking to show compliance with the standards. All buildings must benchmark below the median building of the same type or face significant fines.
